A Practical Look at 100 Weight Pricing and Why It Can Create Better Alignment for Shippers

For many shippers, transportation pricing looks simple until freight actually starts moving through an LTL network.

At the quote stage, one method may appear easier to understand than another. Once shipments move through consolidation, linehaul, cross-dock handling, and final delivery, however, the logic behind that pricing becomes much more important. That is especially true when comparing common rating methods such as per-pallet pricing, flat lift charges, and 100 weight pricing.

At Logistics Alliance, this is something we see regularly in retail and consumer supply chains. Among the methods used in the market, 100 weight pricing is often one of the most misunderstood. It can appear more complex on the surface, but in many LTL environments it creates a more accurate connection between the shipment and the cost to move it.

That is because LTL pricing is not only about how many pallets are on a trailer. It is also about the weight, density, space, and handling profile of the freight moving through the network.

What 100 Weight Pricing Means

100 weight pricing, also known as charge weight (CWT) or per hundredweight pricing, means a shipment is charged based on a rate per 100 pounds of billable weight.

At a basic level, the formula is simple:

Billable Weight × Rate ÷ 100 = Freight Charge

The key word is billable.

In LTL shipping, billable weight is not always the same as actual scale weight. Depending on the shipment and the agreement, rating may also reflect density, cube, linear footage, or other space-related factors. This is where some confusion begins, but it is also where 100 weight pricing becomes more useful.

Rather than forcing very different shipment types into a flat model, it allows the rating structure to better reflect the freight being moved. From Logistics Alliance’s perspective, that is one of the reasons this method can create better alignment for both the network and the shipper.

Why This Can Work Better Than Per-Pallet Pricing

Per-pallet pricing can look simpler because it suggests one pallet equals one cost. In practice, pallet-based methods can create their own confusion.

Not all pallets are alike. They can vary by weight, height, density, stackability, handling requirements, and the amount of trailer space used. A shipment of six dense pallets and a shipment of six light, non-stackable pallets may take up very different amounts of network capacity. Treating them the same does not always reflect the real cost of moving the freight.

That is one reason many LTL pricing models rely on 100 weight principles instead. It creates better alignment between the freight and the network required to move it.

For shippers, that can mean a rating method that is more flexible, more scalable, and often more reflective of the shipment itself.

Why Density and Cube Matter

One of the most common questions in LTL pricing is why a shipment may rate higher than its actual weight would suggest.

The answer is often density.

If freight is light for the amount of trailer space it occupies, the shipment may rate on dimensional or cube weight instead of actual weight. This is not complexity for the sake of complexity. It reflects a practical network reality: trailer space matters.

For example, a pallet that weighs relatively little but is tall, bulky, or non-stackable can limit what else can be loaded around it. In an LTL environment, that space has value. A rating method that considers both weight and space often creates better alignment than pallet count alone.

Clearing Up Common Misunderstandings

There are a few areas where LTL rating methods are often misunderstood.

The first is the idea that a more detailed model is automatically less shipper-friendly. In reality, a structured method can often do a better job of matching cost to the shipment itself, rather than oversimplifying it.

The second is around minimums. Some shippers see a higher minimum and assume the pricing is less competitive. In practice, minimums often reflect the cost of coordinating and managing a shipment, especially in more complex delivery environments. A lower-looking minimum does not always tell the full story if other charges surface later.

The third is the linear foot rule, which is one of the least understood parts of LTL pricing. While it can seem complicated at first, the reasoning behind it is straightforward. If a shipment consumes a large section of trailer space, particularly on an out-of-province or long-haul move, that affects consolidation and network efficiency. In that context, linear-foot or other space-based rating methods are part of how LTL networks function effectively.

The Value of Better Alignment

A stronger rating approach is not just about math. It is about creating better alignment between the freight, the capacity it uses, the handling it requires, and the service needed to move it effectively.

That is where 100 weight pricing can offer real value.

It supports more accurate rating across a wide range of shipment types. It can reward denser, more efficient freight. It can reduce the false simplicity of one-size-fits-all pallet pricing. And it can create a clearer connection between shipment profile and transportation cost.
